I could not have imagined our daughter being at respite for a whole week, ever, until now. The background preparation and communication We Care Collected invested in to understand and have good knowledge regarding our daughter was extremely beneficial and the level of commitment supporting our daughter with unique high needs was absolutely outstanding. We Care Collective put in place a unique package to accommodate the specific requirements and needs of our child most successfully, as well as communicating regularly while away at respite keeping us informed on what activities they had done, how our child was and any little hiccups were managed very professionally and sensitively.— Katrina Sheridan
FAQs
WHAT IS STA Respite (Short Term Accomodation)?
Short Term Accommodation (STA) funding offers support and accommodation for a temporary stay away from your usual home, covering the cost of care for up to 14 days at a time. STA can provide respite for both you and your carer, allowing you to take a break while your family enjoys some time off, or when your regular carers are unavailable. It can also be a valuable opportunity for you to trial independent living, providing a stepping stone toward greater independence.
Beyond offering rest, STA plays an important role in capacity-building. It allows you to build new skills, test out independent living arrangements, and gain confidence in managing everyday tasks in a supported environment. It’s also a chance for you to connect with your personal goals, whether that’s improving your social connections, exploring community activities, or gaining more autonomy in your daily routine. This support gives you the opportunity to gradually adjust to living more independently before making a permanent transition.
How to add it to your plan?
You may not need to add funding for short term accommodation into your plan. You can choose to use your Core budget on supports like STA if it helps you pursue your goals. If your circumstances change and you need short term accommodation, you can ask for a plan reassessment (review) to ensure there is allocated funding in your plan. NDIS can include additional funding to your plan to cover STA if it’s reasonable and necessary.
To learn more about STA, ask your Support Coordinator, LAC, or planner at your next planning meeting.
